Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
John 1: 29-34
John the Baptist was a big shot, but he also realized that he wasn't God. When presented with Jesus to baptize, he did do the deed, and he recognized that Jesus "is the Son of God." There have been many things in the past in which I was some kind of a leading figure, a big shot if you will. And in some of those times, I would let it get to my head. You know the story: boy gets important, boy gets big head, boy expects the world to bow and serve the cause... which is himself. Now to be honest and fair with myself, there were times when I did it right also, and didn't get all full of myself over things. Well, in the Gospel, John the Baptist gives us the great example of recognizing and acknowledging God as supreme over all things, and that He alone should be ranked first. Perhaps at this beginning of a new year, we can attempt to do the same more and more in our own lives. I can certainly stand some improvement there. It's simple to say, but sometimes hard to do. Give to God. Let God take care of it. Do our own job as God gives it to us. And as "success" comes, give glory to God. And as "failure" comes, give glory to God. May the Lord Jesus, Son of God, be with you always, directing your path this year, and may you have the eyes of faith to recognize, acknowledge, and follow His lead!
