Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Matthew 4:12-17
This Gospel passage is so encouraging to me, especially when I know I'm so good at messing up in life. Jesus is billed as being the light for a people in darkness. Also, He goes about "curing every disease and illness among the people." And not only that, He calls Simon, Andrew, James and John from the fishing industry, kinda normal folks like us. This is so encouraging to me. Many times, I feel like I'm in darkness, overwhelmed by the muck of the world. Sometimes I get sick and sometimes my sins are my illness. And most certainly, I'm not a bigshot, but rather a normal guy working his way through this world, hoping to make it to heaven. In all that, Jesus still calls me and you alike to repent and further His kingdom. He heals us of our ills, and is a light to illuminate the path He would have us walk. He is so in it for the little people!!! It's great!!! Like my pastor, Fr. John Ohner, OSA, says all the time, "None of us here at Mass are perfect. Perfect people don't have to come to Mass!" Well, Jesus still shows up, but He shows up to heal us, to light our path as He shows us the way and calls us to follow Him. What an awesome thing, to be called by our God personally to follow Him and be His disciple!!! Oh that each of us, including myself, may hear that call daily, take those steps we are called to take each day, and thankfully breathe deep in the healing touch of our Lord.
